TV Uni-remote
v1.3
(freeware)
Introduction

This is an Omniremote database which has over 80 IR codes for 131 major TV brands. If you lost your remote and don't have the money to buy a $30 Universal Remote just to sit on the couch and flip the channels, this is your savior. You must have Omniremote installed on your Palm device. Visit their web site at http://www.pacificneotek.com/ for more information.

History
Install

1. Download TV Uni-remote.zip

2. Unzip the archive in a temporary directory. You should have the following files:

4. Install the two .pdb files (make a copy of your Omniremote.pdb file from your palm/backup directory on your PC before installing this one)

Instructions

TV_Uni-remote.pdb is a jfile database that lists the TVs brand name, 3 digit code and category to find the code in [see Figure 1]. Some TV's share the same code and some TVs have multiple codes. If you know the brand name of your TV, go to the jfile database and filter out the name in the "Brand" category [Figure 2].

As I said before, some TVs will have more than one possible code [Figure 3]. Try each code for that TV to find the one that works for your set. The TV_Uni-remote.txt file is just what it sounds like, the text version of the above described jfile database. You can print this file out (please don't and save a tree) or you can turn it into a Doc file to read/search it the on the Palm with any one of the many Doc readers out. This file is for the people that don't use/have the room for the jfile program on their Palm. For more information on JFILE, visit their homepage at http://www.land-j.com/. The unregistered version of jfile will display 1 database at a time.

If you already use Omniremote, please make a copy of your Omniremote.pdb file from your palm/backup directory on your PC before installing this one. This database will overwrite the one on the Palm and you will lose all your personal remotes. Here are a few suggestions to keep both Omniremote databases on your Palm at the same time. One great program is called Databag (shareware) http://linkesoft.com/ which allows you to make an archive of any database on your Palm [Figure 4]. You can make 2 archives and restore the one that you want. Another program is called PCompress (freeware) http://www.jump.net/~syenne/pilot/index.html. PCompress will do the same thing plus compress the database to less than half its original size [Figure 5]. You can keep multiple files of the same database compressed on your Palm and restore them when needed. PCompress is free, but beta. I have had only 1 minor conflict with PCompress, but for the most part it's an excellent program. Also, check out pz (freeware) http://www.sra.co.jp/people/hoshi/palmos/pz.html which has some great features and is a very fast compression tool.

The TV Uni-remote screen has 6 mini remotes in each category [see Figure 6]. Each remote has a 3 digit label which doubles as the power button and 5 most commonly used buttons. The buttons are Volume up/down, Channel up/down, and #3 [Figure 7]. The larger "Main" button on the lower right-hand corner is a category button which will bring you to the "Main" category [Figure 8]. The "Main" category has two types of buttons. The buttons under the "TEST" are macro buttons. If you press "TV01" it would be the same as pressing every "code" (power) button in Tv01's category. This can be used to find a TV's frequency when you don't know the brands name. The other type of buttons under the "CATEGORY" will take you to that category. I recommend that you use the category buttons because it will prevent you from accidentally going to the "All" category.

You might wonder why I put a button for the number 3. Well, "most" TVs with cable have channels from 2 to around 60. If you turn the TV on and its on channel 57 and you want to watch Startrek on channel 27, you simply hit "3" "3" and channel down 6 times. Without the "3" button the shortest way to get to channel 27 would be to hit "channel down" 30 times. What if you turned on the TV and it was on 30 and you wanted to watch channel 10? "Most" TVs will go to channel 03 if you hit #3 and wait a few seconds, then you simply go up 7 times. Also, "most" TVs will cycle back to the highest channel if you go down past the lowest channel. For instance, if you were on channel 20 and wanted to watch X-files on 57, you would hit #3 and then go down. When you find your remote you can attach them to your hardware button.

I make no guarantee that any of these IR codes will work with your television. I have no way of testing these and I am, after all only human (90% human 10% borg). I am always open to suggestions. Feel free to e-mail me. gworx@mailandnews.com
