HoliDates v2.80 costs $9.95 for new users. This release is a free upgrade for existing v2.x users.

Installing HoliDates

HoliDates-v2.80.zip contains 3 files:
  • hol28-pg.prc
  • HoliDates Software License Agreement.txt
  • Read_Me.html (this file)

  • Installing HoliDates for the first time
To Install HoliDates v2.80, unzip the files. Use the Palm Desktop Install tool to add the hol28-pg.prc file. Perform a HotSync operation and HoliDates will be installed onto your Palm device.

Unregistered Mode When you first install HoliDates, it will be unregistered. In this mode you will only be able to see the dates for the year 2006. As part of the purchase process, you will be emailed an Unlock Key (5 digit registration code). Go into HoliDates on your Palm device, click on “Register” and enter the Unlock Key. This will remove the limit and the demo mode message. Holidays through the year 2010 will now be available.

Upgrading from an earlier Version 2.x of HoliDates

To upgrade from an earlier version 2, simply install the version 2.80 file called hol28-pg.prc right on top of your existing HoliDates installation.

    Uninstalling HoliDates

To uninstall HoliDates from your Palm Device, go into HoliDates, remove any holidays that you have installed in Date Book. Then delete it from your device.

Using HoliDates on your Palm device

Please note that depending which model handheld you have, that standard Palm calendar tool might be called either Date Book or Calendar. HoliDates is compatible with both of these tools.

VIEW: To view all of the holidays for one or more categories, select the desired categories and click the View button. Use the year dropdown (e.g. "2006") to view the list of holidays for other years. If you have not yet entered the unlock key, then only the holidays for 2006 will be available. An unlock key is emailed to you as part of the purchase process.

Click on the name of the holiday. This will bring up a "Holiday Info" screen that will show the day the event is on, how much time is left until the event will occur and the note for that event (if any). To create or edit a note for an event, click on "Edit Note". Many of the religious holidays come with a brief description.

INSTALL: To add holidays into your Calendar, view the desired holiday categories. Select one or more holidays using the check boxes. Use the "Select->All" or "Select->None" option from the menu to make this faster. Make your selections for one or more years. When you are done, click the install button. A "Please Wait" message will appear while the holidays are being added into Calendar. When this is complete, the 'i' icon next to each holiday will indicate which holidays are installed. Clicking on the 'i' icon will take you to that date within Date . Holidays will appear in Calendar on the appropriate date as an untimed event.

Every event in Calendar created by HoliDates contains a note with a HoliDates category tag. This tag will look similar to "(HoliDates-Christian)". These tags are necessary for HoliDates to be able to find the event again should you use HoliDates to easily remove a holiday from Calendar. The descriptions provided for religious holidays are entered as a part of the note for the event. Edit the note for a given holiday within HoliDates to add additional comments. For events that have been added to Calendar, changes made to the note through HoliDates are automatically updated to the event in Calendar as well. Checking and clicking the install box twice for a holiday will not enter duplicates into Calendar.

Install Preferences: Use these preferences to change the way in which holidays are added to your calendar. Access the preferences by selecting the menu "Options->Install Preferences" from the "View Holidays" screen. Preferences include the ability to add holidays as "Timed" or "Untimed" events. This is useful for Lotus Notes users or others whose desktop calendar does not support untimed events. For users with a calendar tool that supports categories, you can determine into which calendar category the holidays will be added. To create, rename or remove a category within your calendar tool, you must use the calendar tool itself to do that.

For DateBk5 and Agendus users with icon support, you can use the "Note Pre-fix" area to have the holidays added into those tools use a specific icon. To do this, add the string of characters that represent the icon to this field. To see the string of characters to add in this field, create an event using the desired icon through DateBk5 or Agendus. Then look at that event's note from within the standard Palm Calendar (or Date Book) tool. (Note: Some devices such as the Treo 600 use a version of Palm Calendar based on DateBk3 and will not show the characters.) Copy and paste the characters at the beginning of the note into the "Note Pre-fix" field. Then when you add your holidays into your calendar they will have that icon.

Check the "Update installed holidays" box to apply the preferences to all of the holidays that have already been added to your calendar.

REMOVE: To remove one or more holidays entered by HoliDates into Calendar, within HoliDates, select the holidays to remove in the same way you did for installing. If you want to remove a whole category, use the "select->all" from the menu to make checking faster. Checking holidays that were not previously added to Calendar (no 'i' icon next to the holiday) will simply be ignored by the removal process. Click the Remove button. HoliDates will automatically remove the events it had entered by using the identifying Note tag mentioned above. Removal or alteration of the tag, e.g. "(HoliDates-Christian)", within the note causes HoliDates to ignore that event. For example, if you have added additional information for planning a party to a given holiday event, you can remove the tag to make that event invisible to the HoliDates removal process.

Jewish: Jewish holidays always begin at sundown of the previous day.
